Perennial vegetables

Although any favourite crop is worth whatever efforts it takes, on the whole it's better to grow as much as possible with the least work possible. (Unless you use your garden as a gym that is.) Fruit trees are least work each year and soft fruits nearly as good, culinary herbs take little effort but only a little of each is required. Unfortunately our common vegetables are a lot of work with all their annual sowing, thinning or transplanting and care. To say nothing of the autumn dig! Perennial vegetables just have to be a good idea.

Spring has sprung again

I don't know if it's the same where you garden but for me for the last few years Spring has been replaced by a sort of doubled up half hearted Spring arrangement. I have been having a remarkably early start to Spring several weeks ahead of expectation but then instead of things improving slowly into early summer they have gone awry. Instead of a steadily increasing warmth I have experienced a premature (and although incredibly brief almost as good as the usual!) summer and then a very premature autumn where Summer ought to be.

Earlier crops!

With most of the crops in our Kitchen Garden there is always a pressure for earlier harvests. True there is also the necessity to give a succession of crops, and a decent yield in total. But ask most people which crop they look forward to most and it is nearly always the first or earliest strawberries,, cherries, tomatoes, new potatoes and so on........

Crop comparisons by work or value

At this time of the year our memories are still fresh and we can recall how our harvesting went over the last few months, our successes and failures and so on. If we are sensible we note which crops did us well, which varieties performed above average and which below. Over the years we select and choose those ones that fit our needs most closely. Hopefully we don’t waste our efforts growing crops we never use and even more hopefully we don’t run out of favourites too soon.

Cabbages and coles

When you think of kitchen gardens you think of cabbages, well maybe other things as well but certainly there is a row or two of some sort of brassica in every productive plot almost anywhere in the world. Which is not bad going for a humble weed found eking a living on the chalk cliffs of Dover. You can still see a few fairly true specimens though other related crops such as oil seed rape are starting to confuse the population.

Better tomatoes

There is probably no more widely grown crop than tomatoes. Almost every kitchen garden will have some growing indoors or out and I doubt there is any plant more often tried by the novice. There are hundreds of varieties of very differing value, and success with the outdoor ones is almost entirely dependent on the year rather than the gardener's skill.

Drying Beans -a barometrically challenging crop

I doubt there is a vegetable plot in the country that does not grow some beans, however almost invariably these are grown for fresh use and more rarely for their dried seeds. Yet how simple to grow a few more plants and leave these to dry providing stores for winter use when the fresh are but memories.

Asparagus time

There is no crop more valuable than asparagus. Not just by financial measures either, though it can give good returns if sold, but also in terms of time, nutrition and flavour. Asparagus comes in very early when little else is productive, it is a green shoot packed full of vitamins and minerals, and that is why it tastes so good. Indeed it is one of the great gourmet pleasures and almost unchanged since Roman times; references and pictures show them eating asparagus exactly alike to ours today.

Globe, Chinese and Jerusalem

Why artichokes? By any other name would they taste the same, these are reckoned to be similar and are so called. And although widely different plants these do indeed have some similarity in their rich aromatic flavour however it is there any resemblance ends. Except perhaps with their useful ability to produce crops in less than perfect conditions. Indeed these can be so reliable they can be considered the almost perfect stand-bys for famine, planted out of the way and forgotten about until needed.

Winter salads

Salads are often thought of as food for summer days. Indeed they are then often most welcome when hot weather makes heavy cooked meals seem unappetizing. But in many ways we need to eat more salads at this time of year when the range of fresh fruit and vegetables is so much reduced. It is easy for us to slip into a nutritional rut with our meals. We can find ourselves piling on the potatoes and pasta, filling up with stews and casseroles, eating far more dairy products, meat and fats, all in order to fend off the cold.
